NMN vs NAD+: Which Raises NAD+, and Do NAD+ Drips Work?

NMN vs NAD+: what each is, which raises NAD+ in human trials, and what the evidence says about NAD+ and NMN drips.

NMN supplements and NAD+ supplements are often sold side by side as NAD+ boosters for energy, vitality and healthy ageing, and NAD+ is also offered as an IV drip in some wellness clinics. Which one actually helps boost NAD+ levels, what is the difference between NMN and NAD+ supplements, and what is the evidence for each? This guide compares NMN and NAD+ supplements and looks at NAD+ and NMN drips. For background on NMN itself, see our NMN supplement guide.

NMN vs NAD+: the key differences

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is the coenzyme cells use for energy metabolism, redox balance and signalling. [1] Its reduced form is NADH. NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) is a building block made from vitamin B3 (nicotinamide) that cells convert into NAD+ in one enzyme step, which makes NMN a direct precursor to NAD+. NMN is about half the size of NAD+:

NMN NAD+
Role Precursor of NAD+ The active coenzyme
CAS number 1094-61-7 53-84-9
Molecular weight 334.2 g/mol 663.4 g/mol
Human oral trials Many randomised trials; raises blood NAD+ [2][3] Ask for human data on the specific product

Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is a third option, another precursor with its own human trials. [3]

What are the benefits of NAD+?

NAD+ is needed for normal cellular function. Inside cells, NAD+ helps convert nutrients into energy and is central to cellular energy metabolism and redox balance. [1] Enzymes involved in DNA repair, a key form of cellular repair, and the sirtuin enzymes linked to ageing also use NAD+. NAD+ levels decline with age, and this age-related decline in cellular NAD+ is why NAD+ supplementation and precursors such as NMN are marketed for longevity and cellular health. [3]

In more detail: NAD+ is a coenzyme found in every cell and plays a crucial role in metabolic processes. In the mitochondria, the powerhouses of cells, its reduced form NADH carries electrons that cells use to produce ATP, their primary energy currency. Poly ADP-ribose polymerases (PARPs), which help repair DNA, and sirtuins both consume NAD+ when they work. These are the roles of NAD+ in the cell. They are not proof that taking NAD+ or NMN brings health benefits; that has to be shown in trials.

Does NMN supplementation increase NAD+?

Yes. In a 60-day randomised trial in 80 adults, 300 to 900 mg of NMN a day raised blood NAD+ compared with placebo, most at 600 and 900 mg. [2] In a 14-day trial, 1,000 mg once or twice daily gave dose-related increases. [4] A 2026 systematic review found that oral NMN and NR consistently raised NAD-related metabolites in people. [3]

Raising NAD levels is not the same as a health benefit. Meta-analyses have found no effect of NMN on metabolic health markers such as blood sugar, insulin sensitivity or lipids [5], or on muscle [6], and a small effect on diastolic blood pressure. [7] See what the NMN research shows.

Can you just take NAD+ without NMN?

NAD+ is sold as a supplement too. A 2026 systematic review reported that the precursors NMN and NR, taken by mouth, consistently raise NAD-related metabolites in people. [3] If you are considering an oral NAD+ product instead, ask for human data on that specific product. A 2026 review also found that NAD+ responses do not follow a simple dose-response: they depend on dose, age, metabolic state and the route of administration. [1]

NAD+ drips and NMN drips

NAD+ IV drips are offered in some clinics for energy and anti-ageing. The evidence is thin:

  • A 2026 systematic review found no outcome trials of intravenous or intramuscular NAD+ for anti-ageing or wellness. It identified one IV NAD+ pharmacokinetic pilot, which had no eligible clinical outcomes. [3]
  • The same review found one non-randomised study of IV NMN, which mainly gave short-term safety and biomarker data. [3]
  • A second 2026 review describes IV NAD+ as less well characterised and lacking robust clinical validation. [1]

In short, a drip has less evidence behind it than oral NMN or NR, not more.

NAD+ vs NMN: which is better for longevity and anti-aging?

Neither has been shown to extend lifespan or slow ageing in people. A 2026 systematic review found that NAD+ boosting has clear biological activity, but its clinical effectiveness for anti-aging and wellness outcomes is still inconclusive. [3] On the evidence available, the honest answer to “is NMN or NAD+ better?” is this: randomised trials show oral NMN raises NAD+, an oral NAD+ product should show its own human data, and neither has proven longevity benefits.

Does NMN make you look younger?

None of the trials cited here measured appearance, and the 2026 review found anti-aging effects inconclusive. [3] Claims that NMN makes you look younger are not supported by this evidence.

NMN vs NR: what is the difference?

NR is nicotinamide joined to a ribose sugar. NMN is the same molecule with a phosphate group added, and cells convert NR into NMN on the way to NAD+. Both raised NAD-related metabolites in human trials, and both were generally well tolerated. [3]

Dosage: how much NMN and NAD+ have been tested?

People who take NMN in trials used 250 to 2,000 mg a day for 14 days to 24 weeks, without an increase in adverse events. [8] In the dose-comparison trial, blood NAD+ rose most at 600 and 900 mg of NMN a day. [2] These are research doses, not a recommended dosage. The long-term effects are not known.

Can you take NMN and NAD+ together?

The trials cited here tested NMN on its own, so there is no trial data on taking NMN and NAD+ together. NMN lowered diastolic blood pressure slightly in trials [7], so anyone on medications for blood pressure, or with a medical condition, should consult a healthcare provider before supplementing with NMN or NAD+.

Common side effects of NMN and NAD+

For oral NMN, a 2026 meta-analysis of 15 trials found no increase in adverse events, serious adverse events or liver enzymes compared with placebo. [8] For IV NAD+, the 2026 review found no outcome trials, so its safety for wellness use is not well characterised. [3] Our NMN safety guide has the details.

Is NAD+ better than NMN for brain health?

Neither has been shown to improve brain health or memory in the trials and reviews cited here. The 2026 systematic review found that NAD+ boosting had mixed and often null effects on functional outcomes in people. [3]

How long does NMN take to work?

Blood NAD+ rose within 14 to 30 days in trials. [2][4] No trial has shown a timeline for health benefits, because clear health benefits have not yet been shown.

NMN vs NAD+ for formulators

For supplement manufacturers, the choice between NMN and NAD+ powder usually comes down to evidence, stability and positioning:

  • Evidence: randomised trials show oral NMN raises blood NAD+. [2][4] For NAD+ powder, check what human data exists for your intended use.
  • Storage: both need dry, cool storage. On FC Materials’ specifications, NMN has water content ≤1% (long-term storage at −20°C) and NAD+ ≤5% (long-term storage at −25°C to −15°C).
  • Claims: whichever you choose, label claims must match the evidence and the rules of your market.

FC Materials supplies both. See the specifications on our NMN and NAD+ supplier page, or WhatsApp us to talk through your formulation.

This guide summarises research for information. It is not medical advice.

What the research says

  • Oral NMN raises blood NAD+ in randomised trials. [2][4]
  • A 2026 systematic review found no outcome trials of IV or intramuscular NAD+ for anti-ageing or wellness. [3]
  • IV NAD+ is less well characterised and lacks robust clinical validation. [1]

These summaries describe published research on the ingredient. They are not claims for any finished product; claims on finished products must meet the rules of the market where they are sold.
