Species and part
Astragalus root (Huang Qi) comes from Astragalus membranaceus and the closely related A. mongholicus. Only the root is used. Ask for the species and growing region, and for cultivated or wild origin, because these affect marker content.
Markers
The usual markers are astragaloside IV (a saponin) and calycosin-7-glucoside (an isoflavone), both measured by HPLC, plus polysaccharides. Water extracts are rich in polysaccharides; ethanol extracts carry more saponins and isoflavones. A 10:1 ratio describes the extraction, not the content, so ask what the extract is standardised to.
Claims to handle carefully
Astragalus is often linked to “telomere” and longevity marketing. Much of that comes from studies of specific isolated compounds or proprietary products, not from general root extracts. A generic extract cannot borrow those results.
Formulation
Because astragalus is traditionally used for immune support, brands should check for interactions with immunosuppressant medicines. Other tonic botanicals in the range include Ginseng Extract and Reishi Mushroom Extract.
