Oral Hyaluronic Acid Supplements: What the Research Says

What randomised trials of oral hyaluronic acid found for skin and joints, where the evidence is thin, and what to check before you formulate.

Hyaluronic acid is best known in serums, but it is also one of the fastest-moving ingredients in beauty and joint supplements. Can a large sugar molecule taken by mouth make any difference to skin or joints? Here is what controlled trials have found, where the evidence is thin, and what a manufacturer should check before building a product.

The evidence for skin

The strongest summary is a 2025 meta-analysis of 7 randomised controlled trials. It found statistically significant improvements in skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkle depth with oral hyaluronic acid compared with placebo. Effects on skin firmness, wrinkle volume and transepidermal water loss were not statistically significant, though they trended in the same direction. The authors point to the limited sample size and differences between studies, and call for larger trials. [1]

Two individual trials show what the studies look like:

  • 150 healthy Caucasian adults, 12 weeks. Sodium hyaluronate (1.8 MDa) at 120 mg a day improved skin hydration and elasticity, and reduced water loss, sebum and wrinkle depth around the eyes, versus placebo. It also increased epidermal thickness and dermal density. 60 mg a day had similar but more modest effects. Colour, redness, pore size and gloss did not change. The trial was conducted by a sodium hyaluronate producer. [2]
  • 40 healthy Asian adults aged 35–64, 12 weeks. 120 mg of oral hyaluronan a day improved wrinkle scores, skin water content, water loss and elasticity versus placebo. It was a small trial, and several authors were employed by a hyaluronan producer. [3]

The evidence for joints

The joint evidence is older and less independent. A 2016 review of randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials from 2008 to 2015 reported that oral HA reduced symptoms linked to synovitis, particularly knee pain, along with synovial effusion and knee muscle strength. Most of the review’s authors work for an HA producer. [4]

A 2024 pilot study in 51 people with mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis compared a supplement containing 300 mg HA with a glucosamine and chondroitin product and with no treatment, over four weeks. Both supplements improved pain and function scores; the HA product did better on pain. However, the HA product also contained a second extract, patients were not blinded, and the authors call for larger and longer studies. [5]

What the evidence does not show

  • Many trials are industry-run. Producers of hyaluronan funded or ran several of the key studies. That does not make them wrong, but independent replication is limited.
  • The trials are small. Even the meta-analysis pooled only 7 trials.
  • Populations are narrow. Single trials studied one population each, such as healthy Caucasian or Asian adults.
  • Grade matters. Trials used defined molecular weights and doses. A result from a 1.8 MDa grade does not automatically transfer to a hydrolysed grade.

Is hyaluronic acid powder safe to take by mouth?

The trials above gave oral HA daily for up to 12 weeks. The abstracts we cite focus on skin and joint outcomes rather than detailed safety data. The 2024 knee pilot reported a limited number of treatment-emergent adverse events. [5] For a finished product, ask the producer for safety data on the specific oral grade, and follow the dose and claim rules that apply in your market.

Building an oral HA product: a manufacturer’s checklist

  1. Pick the grade from the evidence. Note the molecular weight and daily dose used in the trial you rely on. See our molecular weight guide.
  2. Specify for oral use. Ask for a food or supplement-grade specification, with the microbiological limits that suit oral products.
  3. Check the assay basis. Sodium hyaluronate and hyaluronic acid give different assay numbers. See sodium hyaluronate vs hyaluronic acid.
  4. Think about the format. High molecular weight HA thickens water, which matters for drinks and sachets. Hydrolysed grades stay thin.
  5. Combine thoughtfully. HA is often paired with collagen and vitamin C for skin, or with chondroitin and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine for joints. Claims must be based on the evidence for the whole formula.
  6. Register correctly. In Malaysia, health supplements need NPRA registration. Our FC | Comply team supports registration documentation.

What the research says

  • A 2025 meta-analysis of 7 randomised controlled trials found statistically significant improvements in skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkle depth with oral HA; firmness, wrinkle volume and water loss were not significantly changed. The authors note the limited sample size and heterogeneity. [1]
  • In a 12-week trial in 150 healthy adults, oral sodium hyaluronate at 120 mg a day improved hydration and elasticity and reduced periorbital wrinkle depth versus placebo; 60 mg had more modest effects. The trial was run by a producer. [2]
  • In a 12-week trial in 40 healthy Asian adults, 120 mg of oral hyaluronan a day improved wrinkles, skin water content and elasticity versus placebo. Several authors were employed by a hyaluronan producer. [3]
  • A 2016 review reported that oral HA reduced synovitis-related symptoms, particularly knee pain, in placebo-controlled trials. Most authors work for an HA producer. [4]

These summaries describe published research on the ingredient. They are not claims for any finished product; claims on finished products must meet the rules of the market where they are sold.
