Poria cocos: the fungus behind the ingredient

Poria cocos is the long-standing trade name for Wolfiporia cocos, a wood-decay fungus. The part used is the sclerotium, a dense underground mass the fungus forms on pine roots. In Chinese tradition the dried sclerotium is known as fu ling.

The sclerotium is a compact storage body, not a mushroom cap. It has a dark, bark-like skin around pale inner flesh. Raw material is usually peeled, sliced or cubed and dried before extraction. A specification should therefore name both the species and the part used.

Poria cocos in the FC range

FC Materials offers Poria cocos as Harporia®, a branded extract powder sourced from a global partner. The FC product page describes it as a pure, solvent-free, full-spectrum Poria cocos extract. Polysaccharides are highlighted there as key compounds. Brand background sits on the Harporia® ingredient page.

Raw material and handling checks

Both cultivated and wild-harvested Poria are traded. Dried slices can look like other pale fungal or root materials, so appearance alone is a weak identity check. Points to review:

  • Whether the source is cultivated or wild, and the growing region.
  • How identity was confirmed: macroscopic and microscopic examination, a TLC or HPLC fingerprint, or DNA methods.
  • How the extract powder behaves in your format, whether capsule, tablet or powder blend.
  • Whether the dried powder absorbs moisture or cakes in your warehouse.

What to ask your supplier

  • A batch COA stating the Latin name, the part used and the extraction medium.
  • The identity method and any reference material it was compared against.
  • Marker results: total polysaccharides, and whether triterpenoids such as pachymic acid are profiled.
  • Heavy metals, pesticide residues and microbiology, plus sulphite residues if sulphur fumigation of dried material is a concern.
  • Country of origin, allergen statement and any non-GMO or TSE/BSE declarations your customers expect.
