With a warm, spicy, woody-peppery aroma and a rich composition of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes — particularly beta-caryophyllene — Black Pepper Oil delivers powerful circulatory-stimulating, analgesic, and warming properties that make it a valued ingredient in muscle relief, sports recovery, and digestive support formulations.

In fine fragrance, Black Pepper Oil contributes a distinctive warm, dry, spicy character that adds depth and sophistication to masculine and oriental fragrance accords.

Aroma, not pungency

The heat of black pepper comes from piperine, which is not volatile and does not distil. Black pepper essential oil therefore carries the aroma of pepper but not its pungency; it is made up of terpenes such as beta-caryophyllene, limonene, sabinene, alpha- and beta-pinene and delta-3-carene. Pepper oleoresin, made by solvent extraction, carries both the aroma and the piperine, and a piperine extract such as Black Pepper Extract (Piperine) is standardised on piperine itself. Choose the material that matches the job: this oil for fragrance and flavour aroma, oleoresin or piperine extract where pungency or piperine content is the point.

Quality and stability

The balance between the fresh monoterpenes (limonene, pinenes, sabinene) and the warmer sesquiterpenes (mainly beta-caryophyllene) drives the odour, and it varies with origin and with how fresh the peppercorns were. The monoterpene fraction oxidises in air, so keep containers full, sealed, cool and dark, and check peroxide value on older stock. CO2 extracts of black pepper are also traded and are a different material with a different profile. Other warm spice oils in the range: Ginger Oil and Cinnamon Bark Oil.
