Nutmeg Essential Oil is a therapeutic-grade oil steam-distilled from the dried seeds of Myristica fragrans (nutmeg tree), presenting as colourless to pale yellow. Rich in sabinene, alpha-pinene, and myristicin, Nutmeg Oil delivers a warm, spicy, woody-sweet, slightly camphorous aroma that is deeply familiar in both culinary and aromatic contexts. In Southeast Asia, nutmeg holds particular historical and cultural significance — the Banda Islands of Indonesia were once the world’s only source of nutmeg, and the spice trade that controlled it shaped the history of the entire region.

East Indian or West Indian
Nutmeg oil is distilled from Myristica fragrans grown in two main regions, and the oils differ. East Indian oil (Indonesia) is generally richer in myristicin and has a stronger, spicier profile; West Indian oil (the Caribbean, mainly Grenada) is lighter and lower in myristicin. Confirm the origin, because it changes both the aroma and the specification.
Myristicin and safrole
Nutmeg oil naturally contains myristicin, elemicin and small amounts of safrole. Safrole is restricted in cosmetics and in food flavourings in several markets, and myristicin is the reason nutmeg is not harmless in large ingested amounts. Ask for all three on the certificate, and check the finished-product limits for your application, particularly for flavour and oral-care uses.
Formulation notes
Nutmeg oil is not water-soluble and needs a solubiliser in aqueous systems. Its monoterpenes, sabinene and the pinenes, oxidise over time, so keep stock sealed, cool and dark.
What to ask for on the certificate of analysis
- Species and origin (East Indian or West Indian).
- GC profile with sabinene, α- and β-pinene, myristicin, elemicin and safrole reported individually.
- Refractive index, optical rotation and specific gravity.
- Distillation date.
