Tiger Milk Mushroom Extract is a concentrated botanical extract derived from the sclerotium of Lignosus rhinocerotis, a rare medicinal mushroom native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia — with particularly deep cultural significance in Malaysia, where it has been used by indigenous Orang Asli communities for generations as a prized remedy for coughs, asthma, and respiratory conditions. With a 10:1 extraction ratio (USP39), this extract delivers a potent dose of beta-glucans, polysaccharides, and unique bioactive proteins exclusive to this species.

Tiger Milk Mushroom is Malaysia’s national treasure botanical — a uniquely Malaysian ingredient with strong national identity, growing clinical research, and significant market potential as a premium respiratory health and immune-support supplement ingredient both domestically and in the broader ASEAN and Chinese health supplement markets.

Species and part

Tiger milk mushroom is Lignosus rhinocerus (also spelled L. rhinocerotis). The part used is the sclerotium, a tuber-like underground storage organ, not the cap or stem. Wild sclerotia are scarce and hard to identify, so commercial supply in Malaysia now relies mainly on cultivated sclerotia. Ask whether the material is wild or cultivated sclerotium, or mycelium, and how the species was identified (for example by DNA sequencing), because related Lignosus species look similar.

What “10:1” does and does not tell you

A 10:1 ratio describes how much raw sclerotium went into each kilogram of extract. It does not state the content of any compound. USP is a pharmacopoeia; citing an edition (such as USP39) only has meaning when a specific monograph or general test is named. Ask which test the reference refers to.

Markers and methods

As with other mushrooms, colorimetric “polysaccharide” tests include starch and sugars. Beta-glucan by an enzymatic method, with alpha-glucan reported separately, is a more meaningful figure. Water and ethanol extraction pull different compounds, so the solvent should be stated.

Contaminants

Mushrooms can take up heavy metals from their substrate, so lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury results matter. Other mushroom extracts in the range include Reishi Mushroom Extract and Cordyceps Extract.

What to ask for on the certificate of analysis

  • Species, identification method, and part (sclerotium or mycelium; wild or cultivated)
  • Extraction solvent and extract ratio
  • Beta-glucan (enzymatic) and alpha-glucan; total polysaccharides with the method
  • Heavy metals (Pb, Cd, As, Hg) and pesticide residues
  • Microbiology: total plate count, yeast and mould, E. coli, Salmonella
  • Carrier (if any), Halal certificate, batch number, manufacture and retest dates
