Natural oil or synthetic methyl salicylate
Wintergreen oil is almost pure methyl salicylate, which is also made synthetically at a fraction of the cost — and sweet birch oil is nearly identical. That makes wintergreen one of the most easily substituted oils on the market. If you need a natural claim, ask for evidence of natural origin, such as carbon-14 analysis, and for the minor components that the synthetic ester lacks. Safety and regulation
At this concentration, wintergreen oil is toxic if swallowed and particularly hazardous to children; some markets require child-resistant packaging for liquid products above a threshold methyl salicylate content. Formulation notes
