Frangipani Oil is a precious aromatic oil derived from the flowers of Plumeria species, presenting as an amber-coloured liquid. One of the most beloved and culturally significant floral fragrances in Southeast Asia — where frangipani (bunga kemboja) flowers hold deep spiritual and ceremonial importance across Malay, Thai, Balinese, and broader Southeast Asian cultures — Frangipani Oil delivers an intensely sweet, rich, exotic tropical floral fragrance that is unmistakably associated with tropical warmth, spirituality, and sensuality.

True Frangipani absolute or oil is among the most expensive natural floral ingredients in perfumery, making solvent-extracted or enfleurage versions highly prized for their authentic and complex fragrance profile.

  • Fine Fragrance (tropical floral heart note in feminine, exotic, and oriental perfumes)

Natural absolute or fragrance compound

Frangipani (Plumeria) flowers do not give a usable steam-distilled oil. Natural frangipani material is an absolute, made by solvent extraction of the flowers to a concrete and then an ethanol wash; it is scarce and expensive. Much “frangipani oil” in trade is a fragrance compound built from aroma chemicals to reproduce the scent, or a dilution of absolute in a carrier. These differ completely in cost, natural status, INCI and documentation, so the product type must be confirmed before any natural claim is made.

Composition

Plumeria absolute is commonly reported to contain benzyl salicylate, benzyl benzoate, linalool, geraniol and nerolidol among its main constituents, giving its sweet, creamy, apricot-like floral character. Several of these are declarable fragrance allergens. For a fragrance compound, the fragrance house’s IFRA certificate and allergen declaration replace a natural-oil GC profile as the key documents.

In the formula

It pairs with other tropical florals such as Ylang-Ylang Oil and Jasmine Oil.
