Patchouli Essential Oil is a therapeutic-grade oil steam-distilled from the dried and fermented leaves of Pogostemon cablin, presenting as a brown colour. One of the most distinctive and long-lasting essential oils in the world — and the only oil that improves significantly with age — Patchouli delivers a rich, deep, earthy, musky, sweet-woody, and slightly camphorous fragrance dominated by patchoulol (a sesquiterpene alcohol). It is one of the most widely used base notes in fine perfumery, forming the backbone of countless oriental, chypre, and gourmand fragrance compositions.
In skincare, Patchouli Oil has well-documented cell-regenerating and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a valuable ingredient in anti-ageing, wound-healing, and scar formulations.

- Fine Fragrance (essential deep earthy base note in oriental, chypre, and gourmand perfumes)
- Skincare (cell-regenerating anti-ageing formulations, scar and wound healing products)

- Personal Care (musky body care, luxury bath products, hair fragrance)

Patchoulol is the quality marker
Patchouli oil is judged mainly on its patchoulol content — the sesquiterpene alcohol that carries its deep, lasting character — together with the rest of its sesquiterpene profile. Most of the world’s supply comes from Indonesia. Oils vary widely with leaf quality, drying and fermentation, and distillation, so compare lots on the GC profile rather than on colour or name.
Colour and iron
Patchouli distilled in iron stills picks up iron and is darker; iron-free or redistilled grades are lighter in colour. For clear or pale products, or where the oil meets ingredients that react with metals, ask for a light, low-iron grade.
Formulation notes
Patchouli is valued for how it mellows with age, and it works as a fixative base note that slows the evaporation of lighter notes in a blend. It is not water-soluble and needs a solubiliser in aqueous systems. Store it sealed and away from light.
