Sage (Salvia officinalis) is a culinary and medicinal herb with a rich history in traditional medicine for cognitive enhancement, menopausal symptom relief, and antimicrobial properties. Its primary bioactives — rosmarinic acid, carnosic acid, and thujone — deliver acetylcholinesterase inhibition (cognitive support), phytoestrogenic activity (menopausal relief), and potent antioxidant protection.

Applications:

  • Cognitive health and memory support formulations
  • Menopausal hot flash and hormonal balance supplements
  • Natural antimicrobial oral care formulations
  • Antioxidant and anti-ageing nutraceuticals

Key Features & Benefits:

  • Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor — supports memory and cognitive function
  • Phytoestrogenic — clinically studied for menopausal symptom relief
  • Rosmarinic acid and carnosic acid — potent antioxidants
  • No animal substance – halal-certified
  • Available as dried herb powder and standardised extract

Thujone is the key safety marker

Sage leaf (Salvia officinalis) contains essential oil rich in thujone, a compound limited in foods and beverages in several markets because of its effects at high intake. The amount carried into an extract depends on the solvent: oil-rich and ethanolic extracts generally carry more than water extracts. Ask for thujone content (alpha plus beta) on the COA.

Markers for quality

The phenolic markers of sage are rosmarinic acid (water-soluble) and carnosic acid and carnosol (fat-soluble). Ask which is specified and by which method (HPLC). Dried herb powder and standardised extract are different products; state which one you need.

Formulation and labelling notes

Sage is often positioned in women’s health and cognitive blends alongside Wild Yam Extract, Bacopa Extract or Ginkgo Biloba Extract. Check the warnings your market requires for pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What to ask for on the certificate of analysis

  • Botanical name and plant part (Salvia officinalis leaf)
  • Thujone (alpha + beta) content
  • Rosmarinic acid or carnosic acid by HPLC, if specified
  • Extraction solvent and carrier with its percentage
  • Identity test (TLC or HPLC fingerprint)
  • Loss on drying, heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury) and pesticide residues
