Which cordyceps

“Cordyceps” covers materials that are not interchangeable. Wild Ophiocordyceps sinensis (formerly Cordyceps sinensis), harvested from the Himalayan plateau, is extremely costly, so commercial “Cordyceps sinensis” extracts are usually made from fermented mycelium of selected strains. Cordyceps militaris is cultivated on a large scale, and its fruiting bodies are a recognised source of cordycepin. Species or strain, and whether the material is fruiting body or mycelium, must be stated. FC also lists Cordyceps Sinensis Extract 40% and the branded Cordyvigor® (Cordyceps militaris).

Markers and test methods

Cordycepin and adenosine are measured by HPLC. Cordycepin is characteristic of C. militaris and low or absent in many sinensis-type materials. Polysaccharide figures depend heavily on the method: mycelium grown on grain contains starch from the substrate, which simple polysaccharide tests count. An enzymatic beta-glucan method gives a more meaningful figure.
