Geranium Essential Oil is a therapeutic-grade oil steam-distilled from the leaves and stems of Pelargonium graveolens (rose geranium), presenting as light yellow to green. Rich in citronellol, geraniol, and linalool, Geranium Oil delivers a fresh, sweet, rose-like, slightly minty floral fragrance and is one of the most versatile essential oils in both aromatherapy and personal care — balancing sebum production, supporting hormonal balance, and providing antifungal and antimicrobial protection. It is often used as a more affordable alternative to Bulgarian Rose Oil in fragrance formulations.

Applications:

  • Skincare (sebum-balancing formulations for all skin types, anti-ageing, toning products)
  • Women’s Health Aromatherapy (hormonal balance, menopausal support, PMS relief blends)
  • Fine Fragrance (fresh rose-like floral heart note, affordable rose alternative)
  • Insect Repellent (natural geraniol-based insect-repelling formulations)

Key Features & Benefits:

  • Light yellow to green – authentic rose geranium essential oil
  • No animal substance – suitable for vegan and Halal-compliant formulations
  • Sebum-balancing for oily, dry, and combination skin formulations
  • Natural insect-repelling geraniol content
  • Affordable and versatile rose-floral alternative for fine fragrance

Origin changes the chemistry

Commercial geranium oil comes from Pelargonium cultivars grown mainly in Egypt, China and the Indian Ocean (the Bourbon type), and the three smell and test differently. The ratio of citronellol to geraniol is the standard fingerprint: Chinese oils usually run higher in citronellol and smell sharper, while Egyptian and Bourbon oils are more balanced and rosier. Egyptian oil typically contains 10-epi-gamma-eudesmol, a marker largely absent from Chinese oil, and the Bourbon type is recognised by guaia-6,9-diene. Ask which origin is being supplied and keep it consistent across batches.

Allergens and adulteration

Citronellol, geraniol and linalool are all declarable fragrance allergens, and synthetic citronellol and geraniol are also the cheapest way to stretch a geranium oil. A GC-MS profile read against the ISO 4731 ranges for the stated origin is the practical check.

Geranium in rose accords

Because it shares rose’s citronellol and geraniol, geranium is used to build and extend rose accords alongside Rose Oil. It also pairs with the citronellal-rich Citronella Oil in fresh household fragrances.
