Algae Oil DHA Powder is a premium plant-based omega-3 ingredient derived from microalgae — the original marine source of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). With a DHA content of more than 10% (CWS grade), this microencapsulated powder form provides the same essential omega-3 fatty acid found in fish oil, but sourced entirely from algae — making it a clean, sustainable, and fully plant-based alternative to fish-derived DHA.

As the primary structural omega-3 in the brain, retina, and nervous system, DHA is one of the most clinically important nutrients in human health. Algae Oil DHA Powder is the preferred choice for vegan, vegetarian, and fish-allergen-free nutraceutical formulations.

Applications:

  • Nutraceuticals (brain health supplements, omega-3 capsules, vegan DHA formulations)
  • Maternal & Infant Health (prenatal DHA supplements, infant nutrition fortification)
  • Cognitive Health (memory, focus, and neuroprotection supplements)
  • Functional Foods (DHA-fortified milk powders, health bars, beverages)

Key Features & Benefits:

  • DHA >10% (CWS) – concentrated and bioavailable
  • 100% plant-based, vegan-suitable omega-3 source
  • Sustainable algae origin – no fish or marine animal byproducts
  • Microencapsulated powder form for easy formulation
  • Suitable for capsule, powder, and fortified food applications

Where algal DHA comes from

Fish get their DHA from the microalgae at the base of the marine food chain. Algal DHA oil is made by growing selected microalgae, such as Schizochytrium species, in closed fermentation tanks, then extracting and refining the oil. It avoids fish ingredients, which suits vegetarian, vegan and fish-allergen-free products. Ask for the algal species and strain, because DHA, EPA and DPA content differ between strains.

What “DHA >10% (CWS)” means

CWS stands for cold-water-soluble (dispersible): the oil is microencapsulated with a carrier and emulsifier so the powder disperses in cold water and milk. DHA >10% is the DHA content of the powder. To compare offers, work out the cost per gram of DHA, not per kilogram of powder, and check whether the carrier contains milk protein or other allergens. A fish-or-algae powder is also listed as DHA Powder.

Formulation notes

Algal DHA oxidises as easily as fish DHA. Add it late in processing, keep heat and oxygen exposure low, and use nitrogen-flushed or high-barrier packs for finished products. Test odour and taste over shelf life, especially in milk powders and drinks.

What the research says

  • In a 2-week randomised study of 32 healthy adults, 600 mg a day of DHA from algal-oil capsules raised DHA in plasma phospholipids (by about 80%) and red blood cells (by about 25%) to the same extent as the same amount of DHA from cooked salmon. The study was small, short and open-label, and it tested capsules, not powder. [1]
  • A 2018 Cochrane review of 70 randomised trials (19,927 women) found that omega-3 long-chain fatty acids in pregnancy reduced preterm birth before 37 weeks by 11% and before 34 weeks by 42% (high-quality evidence). More pregnancies continued beyond 42 weeks. The review was not specific to algal DHA. [2]

These summaries describe published research on the ingredient. They are not claims for any finished product; claims on finished products must meet the rules of the market where they are sold.
