DHA Powder (Docosahexaenoic Acid) is a microencapsulated omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid, available in algae-derived (vegan) and fish oil-derived forms. How DHA powder is made
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid, C22:6 n-3) is a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid. Powder grades are made by emulsifying fish oil or algal oil with a carrier, such as modified starch, glucose syrup or milk protein, and spray-drying it so that the oil is held inside small particles. This protects the oil from air and lets it be blended into dry mixes, milk powders, tablets and capsules. The DHA figure is stated as a percentage of the powder, for example 10%, not of the oil.
Fish or algae source
Fish oil usually provides both DHA and EPA. Algal oil from microalgae is mainly DHA and suits vegetarian, vegan and fish-free formulas; see Algae Oil DHA Powder. Ask which source each lot comes from, the DHA and EPA content, and whether the halal certificate covers the oil, the carrier and the emulsifier.
Oxidation is the main quality risk
DHA has six double bonds and oxidises easily, which causes fishy or paint-like odours. Check the peroxide value and anisidine value (often combined as TOTOX) on oil taken from the powder, and keep the pack sealed, cool and dry. In finished products, avoid long exposure to heat, light, oxygen and free iron or copper, and test odour over shelf life.
What the research says
- A 2018 Cochrane review of 70 randomised trials (19,927 women) found that omega-3 long-chain fatty acids (DHA, EPA or both) in pregnancy reduced preterm birth before 37 weeks by 11% and early preterm birth before 34 weeks by 42% (high-quality evidence), and slightly reduced low birthweight. [1]
- The same review found more pregnancies continuing beyond 42 weeks (RR 1.61), and few differences in children’s cognition, IQ or vision, where the evidence was of low or very low quality. [1]

What to ask for on the certificate of analysis
- DHA content (% of powder, and EPA if present) by GC, with the method
- Source of the oil (fish species or algal strain)
- Peroxide value, anisidine value and TOTOX, tested on oil extracted from the powder
- Surface (free) oil, moisture and particle size
- Carrier and antioxidant system declared, including any allergen such as milk protein
- Heavy metals, and dioxins and PCBs where required by the destination market
- Microbiology: total plate count, yeast and mould, E. coli, Salmonella
- Batch number, manufacture and retest dates; nitrogen-flushed pack
