About allantoin
Allantoin (INCI: Allantoin; CAS 97-59-6) is the compound (2,5-dioxoimidazolidin-4-yl)urea, also called 5-ureidohydantoin or glyoxyldiureide. Its molecular formula is C4H6N4O3 and its molecular weight is 158.12.
What it does in a formula
In cosmetic ingredient classifications, allantoin is listed as a soothing agent. In the United States it is also a permitted active ingredient in over-the-counter skin protectant drug products at 0.5 to 2 percent (21 CFR 347.10). That is a US drug-product rule; cosmetic use is regulated separately in each market, so confirm the rules for every market you sell into.
Solubility is the main formulation constraint
Allantoin dissolves poorly. Published values at 25 °C are about 0.57% in water, 0.04% in ethanol (96%), 0.40% in propylene glycol/water (1:1) and 0.60% in glycerol/water (1:1). Above its solubility it will not dissolve in the water phase, so plan the level and the phase with these figures in mind. It melts with decomposition at about 230–239 °C.
