Cold-pressed versus distilled lemon oil
Cold-pressed lemon oil keeps the rind’s non-volatile fraction, including furocoumarins such as bergapten and oxypeucedanin, so it is phototoxic and IFRA limits it in leave-on products applied to sun-exposed skin. Distilled lemon oil leaves those non-volatile compounds behind, is not phototoxic, and smells flatter and less like fresh peel. For leave-on skincare, a distilled or furocoumarin-free grade is the usual choice.
Oxidation is the main stability risk
Limonene oxidises in air to hydroperoxides, which are skin sensitisers, and oxidised lemon oil also loses its fresh note. Buy what can be used quickly, keep containers full, sealed, cool and dark (nitrogen blanketing helps), and check peroxide value on older stock. If the supplier has added an antioxidant such as tocopherol or BHT, it should be declared.
Citral and folded oils
Limonene carries the volume, but the lemon character comes mostly from citral (neral and geranial), present at only a few percent; citral content is a key quality marker and is also a declarable allergen. Folded or terpeneless lemon oils concentrate the citral and oxygenated fraction, dissolve better in water-alcohol and flavour systems, and resist oxidation better. What to ask for on the certificate of analysis
- Process: cold-pressed, distilled, or folded/terpeneless
- GC profile with limonene and citral (neral + geranial) quantified
- Furocoumarin content or phototoxicity statement
- Peroxide value and date of manufacture
- Physical constants: relative density, refractive index, optical rotation, evaporation residue
- Any added antioxidant declared
- Declarable fragrance allergens, a current IFRA certificate, and food or cosmetic grade
