Levodopa (L-DOPA) is the direct biochemical precursor to dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine — the primary catecholamine neurotransmitters. In supplement form it is derived predominantly from Mucuna pruriens (velvet bean) seed extract, which naturally contains 4–7% L-DOPA. As a nutraceutical, it supports dopamine-deficient states, mood, motivation, libido, and Parkinson’s disease symptom management in a natural extract form.

Applications:

  • Dopamine precursor and mood support supplement formulations
  • Male libido and growth hormone support (via dopamine stimulation)
  • Neurological health and Parkinson’s natural support formulations
  • Cognitive performance and motivation supplement blends

Key Features & Benefits:

  • Direct dopamine precursor — crosses blood-brain barrier efficiently
  • Naturally sourced from Mucuna pruriens seed extract
  • Supports mood, motivation, libido, and cognitive drive
  • No animal substance – halal-certified
  • Stimulates growth hormone release via hypothalamic dopamine

What L-DOPA is

L-DOPA (levodopa, L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine) is an amino acid with a catechol group. It occurs naturally in the seeds of Mucuna pruriens (velvet bean), and extracts are standardised to a stated percentage of L-DOPA. Ask whether the product is a Mucuna seed extract or synthetic L-DOPA, and for the L-DOPA content by HPLC.

Check regulatory status first

Levodopa is also a prescription medicine for Parkinson’s disease. Because of this, regulators may treat products by their L-DOPA content, dose and claims as medicines rather than food supplements. Before you develop a product, confirm its status with the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) in Malaysia or the regulator in your destination market. Claims about Parkinson’s disease, hormones or other medical effects should not be made for a food or supplement. If you are unsure, WhatsApp us before ordering.

Stability and handling

The catechol group oxidises in air and light, and faster in solution and at neutral or alkaline pH. The powder then darkens towards brown or black. Store sealed, cool, dry and away from light, and check colour and assay at the retest date. Related amino acid ingredients include L-Phenylalanine.

What to ask for on the certificate of analysis

  • Source: Mucuna pruriens seed extract (with solvent and carrier) or synthetic
  • L-DOPA assay by HPLC, with the method
  • Identity test (TLC or HPLC fingerprint for the extract)
  • Appearance and colour (darkening suggests oxidation)
  • Loss on drying, heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury) and pesticide residues
  • Microbiology: total plate count, yeast and mould, E. coli, Salmonella
  • Batch number, manufacture and retest dates
