Eurycomanone is the usual marker
Tongkat ali extract is made from the root of Eurycoma longifolia. Its characteristic compounds are quassinoids, with eurycomanone the marker most often specified. The “10:1 (TLC)” on this product describes the concentration ratio and an identity test; TLC confirms identity but does not measure content. If you need to match a studied extract, ask for eurycomanone by HPLC.
Water extracts and studied extracts
Clinical studies use specific standardised extracts, defined by markers such as eurycomanone. Results from one standardised extract cannot be assumed for another, so compare the specification of your extract with the one used in any study you cite.
Quality checks for male-health botanicals
Root materials can carry heavy metals from soil, so ask for a full heavy-metal panel. Some markets also expect screening for undeclared synthetic compounds in male-health products. Tongkat ali is often formulated with Tribulus Terrestris Extract or Horny Goat Weed Extract.
What the research says
- A 2022 systematic review of 9 studies, with a meta-analysis of 5 randomised trials, found that E. longifolia raised total testosterone in men (SMD 1.35), including in a hypogonadal subgroup. The authors state that more research is needed before clinical use. [1]
- A 2023 systematic review of 52 studies of “testosterone boosters” found that most fail to raise total testosterone, but considered E. longifolia possibly effective for men with late-onset hypogonadism and for healthy men. [2]
