Species and the icariin marker
Horny goat weed is the leaf of several Epimedium species. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia lists more than one species under the herb, and their flavonoid profiles differ. Extracts are standardised to icariin, the main prenylated flavonoid, measured by HPLC. Grades range from low percentages such as 10% to highly purified icariin, so confirm the species, the plant part and the icariin result with its method for every lot.
Testing for adulteration
Products sold for male sexual health are a known target for adulteration with undeclared prescription drugs such as sildenafil and its analogues. For extracts going into these products, ask the supplier for a test that screens for PDE5-inhibitor drugs and their analogues, and consider testing finished products as well.
Claims
Claims about erectile function, testosterone or osteoporosis are medical claims, and products for sexual function are closely watched by regulators, including the NPRA in Malaysia.
