Artichoke Extract (10:1) is a concentrated botanical extract derived from the leaves of Cynara scolymus, the globe artichoke plant. At a 10:1 concentration ratio, this extract delivers a potent dose of cynarin, chlorogenic acid, luteolin, and caffeic acid derivatives — the key bioactive compounds responsible for artichoke’s well-documented liver-protective, cholesterol-lowering, digestive-supportive, and bile-stimulating properties.

Artichoke Extract is a well-established ingredient in the European herbal medicine tradition and has gained growing global traction as a liver health, digestive support, and cholesterol management ingredient in modern nutraceutical formulations.

Applications:

  • Nutraceuticals (liver support supplements, cholesterol management capsules, digestive health blends)
  • Weight Management (bile stimulation for fat digestion, metabolism support)
  • Functional Foods & Beverages (liver health teas, bitter digestive tonics)
  • Traditional Herbal Medicine (European phytomedicine formulations)

Key Features & Benefits:

  • 10:1 concentrated cynarin and chlorogenic acid-rich extract
  • Clinically studied for liver protection and LDL cholesterol reduction
  • Stimulates bile production for improved fat digestion
  • Halal-certified & food-grade quality
  • Suitable for capsule, tablet, and liquid formulations

Caffeoylquinic acids are the markers

Artichoke extract is made from the leaves of Cynara scolymus. Its usual markers are caffeoylquinic acids: chlorogenic acid and cynarin (a dicaffeoylquinic acid), often reported together as total caffeoylquinic acids by HPLC. Flavonoids such as luteolin glycosides are also present. A 10:1 ratio does not state any of these, so ask for a marker figure and its method.

Taste and format

Artichoke leaf is strongly bitter from sesquiterpene lactones such as cynaropicrin. It is mostly used in capsules and tablets, or in bitter digestive drinks where the taste is part of the product. Artichoke belongs to the daisy family (Asteraceae), so consider an allergy statement.

Formulation notes

Caffeoylquinic acids can degrade with heat and in solution, so check marker content in your finished product during stability testing. Artichoke is often combined with Milk Thistle Extract or Dandelion Root Extract in digestive and liver-category blends.

What the research says

  • A 2018 meta-analysis of 9 randomised trials (702 participants) found that artichoke extract lowered total cholesterol (by about 17.6 mg/dL), LDL cholesterol (14.9 mg/dL) and triglycerides (9.2 mg/dL), with no change in HDL. The LDL-lowering effect was larger in people with higher starting LDL. [1]
  • A 2025 meta-analysis found modest reductions in total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides, blood pressure, insulin and the liver enzyme ALT, but no effect on HDL, fasting glucose, HbA1c or body weight. The authors describe the improvements as modest. [2]

These summaries describe published research on the ingredient. They are not claims for any finished product; claims on finished products must meet the rules of the market where they are sold.
