Garcinia Cambogia Extract is a concentrated botanical extract derived from the rind of Garcinia cambogia (Malabar tamarind), standardised to contain 60% Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) by HPLC. HCA is usually sold as a salt
Free hydroxycitric acid (HCA) is unstable. It readily closes into HCA lactone, a different compound. Commercial extracts are therefore usually supplied as salts: calcium, potassium, or mixed calcium-potassium. The salt matters. Calcium salts are poorly soluble; potassium salts dissolve well but take up moisture. A “60% HCA” figure should say whether it is free HCA, HCA in the salt, or HCA including lactone. HPLC can report HCA and lactone separately.
Name and source
The accepted botanical name is Garcinia gummi-gutta; Garcinia cambogia is a widely used synonym. The extract comes from the dried fruit rind. A related fruit from the same genus is Mangosteen.
Safety in formulation
There are published case reports of liver injury in people taking weight-loss products that contained garcinia, often alongside other ingredients. Brands should carry out their own safety review and follow local rules on weight-management claims. Other fibre-based ingredients used in this category include Chitosan and Glucomannan.
What the research says
- A 2020 dose-response meta-analysis of 8 randomised trials (530 participants) found Garcinia cambogia lowered body weight by 1.34 kg versus placebo. [1]
- In the same review, BMI fell by 0.99 kg/m², body fat percentage by 0.42 and waist circumference by 4.16 cm. The dose-response relationship with weight was non-linear. [1]
- A 2025 meta-analysis of 9 publications (444 participants) found no significant effect on fasting blood sugar, insulin or the liver enzymes ALT and AST. [2]
- In its subgroup analyses, insulin rose in women, and insulin and fasting blood sugar rose in people with a BMI of 30 kg/m² or more. [2]
