Mangosteen Powder is produced from the whole fruit of Garcinia mangostana — the Queen of Fruits native to Southeast Asia. The pericarp (purple rind) is extraordinarily rich in xanthones, particularly alpha-mangostin, the most potent xanthone antioxidant known. Where the xanthones are
Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) xanthones, led by alpha-mangostin and gamma-mangostin, are concentrated in the purple pericarp (rind), not in the white edible flesh. A “whole fruit” powder therefore varies with how much rind it contains. If xanthones are the reason you are buying it, ask for the pericarp share and for alpha-mangostin or total xanthones by HPLC.
Solubility and taste
Alpha-mangostin is fat-soluble and barely dissolves in water, so in ready-to-drink products it settles unless the formula is designed for it (for example with an emulsifier or a fine particle size). The rind is astringent and slightly bitter; the flesh is sweet and tart. The ratio of the two decides the taste of the powder.
