Pomegranate Extract is a concentrated botanical extract derived from the fruit and rind of Punica granatum, standardised to contain 40% polyphenols (UV). This highly potent extract delivers a concentrated dose of punicalagins, ellagic acid, anthocyanins, and tannins — the primary bioactive polyphenols responsible for pomegranate’s exceptional antioxidant activity, cardiovascular benefits, anti-inflammatory properties, and increasingly recognised role in gut microbiome health through urolithin production.

Pomegranate is one of the most antioxidant-rich fruits known, and its standardised extract is a premium ingredient in cardiovascular health, anti-ageing, and men’s health supplement formulations, with growing application in sports recovery and gut health categories.

Applications:

  • Nutraceuticals (cardiovascular health capsules, antioxidant supplements, anti-ageing blends)
  • Men’s Health (prostate health formulations, testosterone support, nitric oxide supplements)
  • Sports Nutrition (muscle recovery, anti-inflammatory post-workout blends)
  • Beauty Supplements (skin anti-ageing, collagen protection, beauty drinks)

Key Features & Benefits:

  • 40% polyphenols (UV) – highly standardised antioxidant-rich extract
  • Rich in punicalagins – among the most potent natural polyphenols known
  • Cardiovascular, anti-inflammatory, and anti-ageing properties
  • Halal-certified & food-grade quality
  • Suitable for capsule, powder, and beverage formulations

Polyphenols by UV versus punicalagins by HPLC

A “40% polyphenols (UV)” figure is a total measured by a colour reaction, and other tannins also respond to it. The characteristic compounds of pomegranate are the ellagitannins punicalagin A and B, together with ellagic acid. Ask for an HPLC profile showing punicalagins and ellagic acid, which confirms identity and is harder to imitate with cheaper tannin sources.

Which part of the fruit

Most punicalagins are in the peel (rind). Extracts made from whole fruit, peel or juice therefore differ in composition, taste and colour. Ask which part was used and whether the extract is water- or ethanol-based.

Formulation notes

Ellagitannin-rich extracts are astringent and can darken in solution, especially with iron or at higher pH. In drinks, check taste and colour over shelf life. Related polyphenol ingredients include Grape Seed Extract, Pine Bark Extract and Hydroxytyrosol.

What the research says

  • A 2025 meta-analysis of 53 randomised trials (2,306 participants), covering juices, extracts and other pomegranate products, found small improvements in body weight, BMI, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose and total cholesterol, and a rise in HDL. There was no change in waist, insulin resistance, HbA1c, triglycerides, LDL or liver enzymes. The authors call for longer and larger trials. [1]
  • A 2025 meta-analysis of 15 randomised trials (673 participants) found no significant effect of pomegranate products on insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) or fasting insulin overall. Benefits appeared only in some patient subgroups, and the authors advise caution. [2]

These summaries describe published research on the ingredient. They are not claims for any finished product; claims on finished products must meet the rules of the market where they are sold.
