Berry oil versus branch oil

Juniper berry oil is distilled from the ripe berries of Juniperus communis and is the premium grade. Juniper branch or twig oil, distilled from needles and wood, is much cheaper and harsher, and cade oil (Juniperus oxycedrus) is a dark, smoky tar oil that is a different product altogether. The plant part must be stated on the specification, because branch oil and turpentine are the usual materials used to extend berry oil.

Composition and quality

Berry oil is led by alpha-pinene, myrcene and sabinene, with limonene, beta-pinene and terpinen-4-ol among the other constituents. A profile that is almost all alpha-pinene, without the expected sabinene and myrcene, points to branch oil or turpentine. Juniper is also the characteristic flavour of gin, so food and flavour uses need a food-grade oil.

Oxidation

As a monoterpene-rich oil, juniper berry oxidises in air, and oxidised terpenes are more likely to sensitise skin. Keep containers full, sealed, cool and dark, and check peroxide value on older stock. Related conifer oils: Cypress Oil and Pine Oil.
