Pumpkin Seed Extract is a concentrated botanical extract derived from the seeds of Cucurbita pepo, one of the most nutritionally dense seeds in the plant kingdom. Rich in phytosterols (particularly delta-7-sterols), zinc, magnesium, cucurbitin, and essential fatty acids, Pumpkin Seed Extract has a well-established clinical profile for prostate health in men and bladder/urinary health in both sexes.

Pumpkin Seed Extract is a cornerstone ingredient in men’s prostate health formulations globally, with clinical studies demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) symptoms and supporting urinary flow — making it one of the most evidence-backed botanical ingredients in the men’s health supplement category.

Applications:

  • Men’s Health (prostate health supplements, BPH symptom relief, urinary flow support)
  • Women’s Health (overactive bladder, urinary incontinence support formulations)
  • Nutraceuticals (zinc supplementation, anti-inflammatory blends, general men’s wellness)
  • Sports Nutrition (zinc and magnesium blends, testosterone support formulations)

Key Features & Benefits:

  • Rich in delta-7-phytosterols for prostate health support
  • Clinically studied for BPH symptom relief and urinary flow improvement
  • Natural source of zinc and magnesium
  • Halal-certified & food-grade quality
  • Suitable for capsule, softgel, and powder formulations

Oil extract or dry extract?

Pumpkin seed (Cucurbita pepo) ingredients come as seed oil, oil-based extracts, and dry extracts or powders. They differ in fatty acid, phytosterol and mineral content, and in which formats they suit: oils for softgels, dry extracts for capsules and tablets. Confirm which form this product is before you design a formula.

Phytosterols are the usual marker

Pumpkin seed is notable for delta-7-sterols, which differ from the delta-5-sterols found in most plant oils. If phytosterols are the reason you are buying, ask for total phytosterols, or delta-7-sterols, with the test method. Mineral content such as zinc varies with origin and processing, so do not assume a figure without a certificate.

Formulation notes

Oil-rich materials can oxidise, so ask for peroxide value and check storage conditions. Pumpkin seed extract is often formulated with minerals such as Zinc Picolinate in men’s health blends.

What the research says

  • The GRANU study randomised 1,431 men aged 50–80 with urinary symptoms from an enlarged prostate to pumpkin seed (5 g twice a day), pumpkin seed extract capsules (500 mg twice a day) or placebo for 12 months. The response rate with the extract did not differ from placebo. With whole pumpkin seed, 58.5% of men responded compared with 47.3% on placebo, a difference the authors describe as descriptively significant. The study was only partially blinded, and the authors say the findings need a confirmatory study or systematic review. [1]
  • Results for one extract cannot be assumed to apply to another, because extracts differ in solvent, ratio and composition.
