What ergothioneine is
L-ergothioneine (EGT) is a sulfur-containing compound made from the amino acid histidine. Fungi and some bacteria make it; people and plants do not, so it reaches us through food, mushrooms being a major source. The body takes it up through a dedicated transporter. GLISERA EGT® is extracted from golden oyster mushroom (Pleurotus citrinopileatus), one of the richest natural sources.
What to specify
Ask for the L-ergothioneine content by HPLC and how the extract is standardised. Ergothioneine is also made synthetically and by fermentation, so confirm that the product is a mushroom extract if you plan a natural or vegan claim. Mushrooms take up heavy metals such as cadmium and lead from their substrate, so ask for heavy metal results on every lot.
Regulatory status and claims
The status of ergothioneine as a food or supplement ingredient differs between markets, and may differ between natural extracts and synthetic forms. Check before launch.
